If you want to understand race in modern america, you have to understand. Perhaps no other area in american history was as crucial for shaping racial relaions. Jim crow segregaion, disproporionate incarceraion of african americans, & modern barriers to black poliical paricipaion all have origins in reconstrucion era. At the same ime, civil rights movement begins. Emancipaion proclamaion turned war into a moral crusade & there are no half-measures in a moral crusade. The north had to wage war not just on batleields, but on south"s resources, society, transportaion systems, & most importantly of all, on slavery south"s greatest source of wealth. General went through south & burned towns / farms. Lost of ww iii thesis: southerners lost desire to coninue rapid decline of southern naionalism. North had beter generals & more funcioning military. General strike of slaves fundamentally weakened southern economy inanced war through war bonds; allowed greater military spending.
