Mediterranean: dry summer due to migrating subtropical high pressure cells, dry summer, wet winter (stresses grapes and gives great wine in places like spain, similar to sf) Marine west coast: mild winters, cool summers, maritime polar air masses, coastal fog, vancouver/ireland, more marine air masses increases precipitation year round. Challenges with koppen classification: helps link global air masses and types of climates generally. Issue is where we draw the line: seattle and san diego, climate is classified the same but weather is drastically different, vegetation important to these evaluations as well.
