Higher income families have the option of hiring a nanny or au pair to. An au pair is a foreign national living in the country to care for a child in exchange for room and board. Some families have managed to be creative with their schedules, arranging shifts so that they can rotate care for their children (harris- Baby-sitters provide short term care for specified number of hours, many working part-time in addition to school or other jobs (harris- Formal child care originated in charitable day nurseries mid 19th century, matter of public concern during wwii, stopped after wwii and didn"t start again until 1960s (evans 2006)
