Week 1 Day 1:
What is human services?
Seeking to improve accessibility, accountability, coordination
Meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base
Maintaining commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service
populations
Focusing on prevention and remediation of problems
Primary purpose of human service work is to assist both individuals and the
communities
Idea of "the fixer" or "the righting reflex":
-professional helping is different than friendship
-"you should" statements can make person feel misunderstood, reduces self-
efficacy and agency, leads to feelings of resistance and/or inferiority… prevents
us from: listening, giving the person space, understanding and empathy
What to do instead…
Listen, show that you're listening

Give the person space to talk

Try to understand
-
Check your understanding… "so if I hear you correctly"

Express empathy

Ask questions

Ask permission to share suggestions

*each person is an expert in their own lives*
Prevention Science:
the application of a scientific methodology that seeks to prevent or moderate
major human dysfunctions before they occur. Regardless of the type of issue,
the factors leading to the problem must be identified and addressed
