Reflectance motive- an innate need to manipulate the environment. Competence- a state character by control and mastery of personal environment. Homeostasis arises-period when basic needs have to be satisfied. Need to fell competent and effective over your environment. Children learn two different motives from parents: mastery, dependence. 2 kinds of goals: learning- increase personal sense of competence, performance- gain approval from others. 2 types of orientation: mastery- adopt learning goals. Has capacity to create happiness or health: helpless- choose performance goals. Achieve what you want by learning the rules for winning. Motive to carry out some course of action when that is no external reward. When info doesn"t convey reward im goes down. When we feel our freedom or sense of control is threatened. Overestimate of how much control we actually have. Self-efficacy: belief in ability to exert control over environment. Martin seligman: no perceived connection between behavior and negative outcomes.
