With the biological changes of puberty, teens become more aware of and concerned about their sexuality. Adolescence is a time of sexual exploration, and incorporating sexuality into ones identity. Problem today: a fairly large gap between timing of biological maturity and timing of when it"s socially acceptable to behaviorally express that biological maturity. Reluctant to offer candid responses, even in anonymous surveys. Most adolescents" first experience with sex falls in this category. Fantasies tend to be influenced by popular culture. Opportunity to confront sexuality - recognize nature of impulses, sexual preferences. Can act as substitutes for the satisfaction of sexual needs and goals. May be frightening if really intense - forbidden aspects may provoke guilt. Teens may wonder if they are strange, perverted. May deter teen from establishing age-appropriate ties. Real life may not be able to compete. Tends to be related to sexual fantasies. Like fantasy, is a readily available, safe sexual outlet.
