Broad term that includes physical abuse or neglect, emotional abuse or neglect & sexual abuse of children. Failure of a parent or caregiver to provide for the child"s basic needs & an adequate level of care. Most cases involve children <3 yrs: those children may be less likely to be in school/childcare setting, so no one watching over them outside of direct caregivers. Contributing factors: lack of knowledge of child"s needs, lack of resources, substance abuse. Emotional: failure to meet child"s needs for affection, attention & emotional nurturance, refers the deliberate attempt to destroy or impair a child"s self-esteem or competence. Deliberate infliction of physical injury on a child. Injuries range from bruises & fractures to brain damage. Factors predisposing to physical abuse: child maltreatment occurs across all socioeconomic, religious, cultural, racial, & ethnic groups, risk factors. Personal hx of abuse: huge indicator, assessed frequently. Age <1 yr: constantly crying, unable to defend themselves.
