Document Summary

Inflammation can occur anywhere along the urinary tract. Lower urinary tract: urethritis: inflammation of the urethra, cystitis: inflammation of the bladder. Upper urinary tract: pyelonephritis: inflammation of the kidneys. Utis in neonates often associated with congenital anomalies of the urinary tract or seeding from blood stream. Most utis after the newborn period result from ascending infection from the periurethral mucosa: bacteria attach & ascend to the bladder & kidney. Higher incidence in females & uncircumcised males: host factor plays huge role in etiology. Urinary stasis: major cause, reflux, anatomic abnormalities. Ex: constipation: stool in colon places pressure on bladder, dysfunctional voiding. Extrinsic factors: very person dependent, constipation, poor hygiene. Bubble baths: sexual activity, sexual abuse, pin worms, antibiotics, indwelling catheters. Hypothermia can also be sign of sepsis: jaundice, tachypnea, cyanosis. Often a sign of distress: lethargy.
