Differences between eukaryotic and bacterial viral infections: Infection of animal cells not as specific. The length of the replication cycle varies from 8 hours in polioviruses to 36 hours in herpesviruses. Limited range of cells that a virus can infect. Virus -encodes proteins incorporated into host membrane. Capsid buds outward and is surrounded by host membrane which becomes the envelope. Experts estimate that up to 20% of human cancers are caused by viruses. Effect on the cell caused by oncogenic viruses. Capacity to divide for an indefinite period. Ways that viruses cause cancer in animals: Virus carries genes that directly cause cancer. Virus produces proteins that induce a loss of growth regulation in the cell. It is impossible to estimate the number of viruses that occur on a worldwide basis, by number in the billions. Dengue fever, rift valley fever, yellow fever. Naturally occurs in human cells and is used with some success in treating and preventing viral infections.
