Document Summary

Body is made up of thousands of proteins. Contains nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen (and sometimes, sulfer) Amino acids are the building blocks for proteins. Account for ~17% of body weight: lean tissues, enzymes, hormones. Some physiological condition prevents individual from making sufficient levels of some amino acids. Arginine, cysteine, glycine, glutamine, prolines, and tyrosine. Pathway that allows for nonessential amino acids to be synthesized. Causes red blood cells to have sickle shape. Affects mostly african americans: 1 in 400 births. Order of amino acids in a protein determines its ultimate shape. Proteins final shape determines its function in the body. Denaturation causes the protein to unfold and lose its functional shape: acid, alkalinity, heat, alcohol, oxidation, agitation. Denaturation is the first step in breaking down protein for digestion. Proteins are denatured by cooking and stomach acid, mechanical breaking occurs by chewing.
