Document Summary
Position: environmentalist banning the use of road salt on maine roads. During the winter season, keeping the roads maintained is very important when thinking about safe driving. There are practices that many of us follow, one being salting the roads. There have been several studies showing the impact of the application of salt have insignificant impacts to the environment. But a majority of these studies don"t have research for longer than a couple of seasons. In a study spanning from 0-18 years, it has shown an accumulation of sodium ions in the areas where the salt was applied. The concentration of the ions were determined to be unharmful to the surrounding areas. But, if they continue to apply salt we would see a similar situation that we have seen in fish with mercury. Species like the maine state tree, the pine, have already seen alarming effects from road salt application.
