Phenotype - the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment. Human variation: human phenotypes very within and among populations. What is the source of variation: microevolution. Microevolution: gene ow, genetic drift, natural selection, mutation. Adaptation: genetic, acclimation, developmental accumulation, cultural adaptation. Gene ow: increase diversity within a population, migration, admixture. Genetic drift: decreases diversity within geographically (or culturally) isolated populations. Natural selection: must have existing variation in a population, acts on a tness (differential survival & reproduction) Adaptations to hugh altitudes: acclimation - increased breathing / heart rate, developmental acclimatization - larger lung size. What is race: ethnic category widely perceived to be biological, but there is no biological basis for race it is a culture construct. What is ethnicity: ethnic group - group whose members identify with a common origin, shared history, language, and selected cultural differences, nationality - a sense of identi cation with a nation - state.
