Ethics in anthropology: representation is can be ethical issue, ethical obligation to protect the interests of the people we work with, con dentiality, informed consent, research clearance. Collaborative ethnography: goal is to increase collaborations among scholars, communities, and in conjunction with community-based social movements. Anthropological research: types of research done by anthropologists, ethnography, ethnology, cooperative research, collaborative research, citizen science, critical theory. Non-human communication: chemical communication (ants, body language (bees, call systems (closed) Non-verbal communication: body language, facial expression, tones of voice, accents, grunts & giggles, hand gestures, writing, road signs, language depends on human biology; anatomy, neurological structure, cognition, language is learned. Characteristics of language: productivity, displacement, transmission, lies & humor, grammar & syntax. Universal grammar : innate, syntax is central, universal structure, function is to organize information. Sapir-whorf hypothesis: language shows culture an how people perceive the world. Ethnoscience: semantic domain: how meaning is assigned to categories based on the context of a particular time or place.
