Document Summary

What is evolution: change, biological change through time, descent with modification (darwin, 1859) Carolus linnaeus: system of classification/ basis for taxonomy. Jean baptiste lamarck: first scientist to produce an explanation for evolutionary process. Traits that parents acquire during their lives are passed on to their offspring, who will then have their same traits. This is now rejected, but it was a novel hypothesis to explain variation and recognize change over time. A trait must be inherited to have important in natural selection. Natural selection cannot occur without variation in inherited characteristics. Fitness = reproductive success; a relative measure that will change as the environment changes. Species can produce offspring faster than food supply increases competition. Biological variation occurs within all species and this variation is inherited. Favorable variations are passed on to future generations. Over time, favorable variation produce significant differences (speciation) Darwinian natural selection is a theory (a scientific theory) Supported by a mounting body of evidence.
