Basic Principles of Birth Control
Fertility- person’s ability to reproduce
Birth control- methods of preventing conception
Conception-fertilization of an ovum by a sperm
Perfect use failure rate- # of pregnancies likely to occur in the 1st year of use
of a particular birth control method if the method is used correctly and
consistently
Typical use-failure rate- # of pregnancies likely to occur in the 1st year of use
of a particular BC method if the method is not used correctly or consistently
Barrier method- contraceptive method that block the meeting of egg and
sperm by means of a physical barrier
o Condom
Hormonal methods- contraceptive methods that introduce synthetic
hormones into a woman’s system to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical
mucous, or prevent a fertilized egg from implanting
Surgical methods- surgically altering a man or woman’s reproductive system
to permanent prevent pregnancy
Behavioral methods- temporary or permanent abstinence or planning
intercourse in accordance with fertility patterns
Necessary for conception:
o 1. A viable egg
o 2. A viable sperm
o 3. Access to the egg by the sperm
Barrier Methods
Male Condom
o STI- infectious diseases caused by pathogens transmitted through
some form of sexual contact
o Male Condom- single use sheath of thin latex or other material
designed to fit over an erect penis and to catch semen upon
ejaculation
o Spermicide- substance designed to kill sperm
o Advantages/ Disadvantages
Female Condom
o Flame condom- single use nitrile sheath for internal use during
vaginal intercourse to catch semen upon ejaculation
o Advantages/Disadvantages
Jellies, Creams, Foams, Suppositories, and Film
Jellies and Creams-spermicide packaged in tubes and inserted into the vagina
with an applicator
Foams- spermicide packaged in aerosol cans and inserted into the vagina
with an applicator
