Lecture 2: talking turf (also download chapter 2 and 3 notes) Know areas of golf course: greens, roughs, tees, fairways and where planting beds and flowering shrubs would be used. Turf quality a function of general appearance, health, and playability. On a roadside or airport you are passing turf at 60 mph; passing a home lawn or business, 30 mph but on a golf green or sports field, only 5 mph. Visual components of turfgrass quality: density, texture, uniformity, color and smoothness. Density number of shoots/area that is influenced by fertilization, mowing and pests. High = creeping bentgrass, zoysiagrass, bluegrass (suppports ball play) Grasses are open pollinated, now making male sterile. Texture width of leaf blade that is influenced by density and culture. Mixing grasses of different texture is not recommended. Smoothness a function of soil prep and cut caused by a dull or out of adjustment mower. Darker green is hotter could keep from photosynthisizing.
