Assassination of the archduke franz ferdinand of austria. People associate this for being the prime reason for wwi starting, but it is really just that it was the tipping point. The origins of the first world war = book. Austria had control over a lot of other states. Other countries see austria starting to crumble and try to take advantage. New, powerful, feels the need to prove itself. Throws off balance of power in europe. France, britain, russia v. germany, austria, italy, etc. The progressive era: world war i, how the u. s. got involved. 10 m german immigrants, 5 m irish, etc. We had to remain unique and different. Wanted to be aloof from the old world. We had a lot more trade with these countries.
