History to 1877: british north america- january 26, 2018. Maryland: 1634- 2 ships full of settlers arrive in to the chesapeake bay. Religious issues- catholic and protestant (what to do with all the catholic people left in england)- send them to maryland. Queen henrietta maria is french wife of the england king to send the catholics to a safe haven. (maryland- named after her) Separatists- more radical, complete separation from catholic church, persecuted, 1607: go to holland, 1620: some go to virginia. The pilgrims: 1620- 102 men, women and children- mayflower (virginia) They got the name pilgrims later in life because they went to virginia to pilgrimage. Storm: they ended up landing in cape cod, ma. Mayflower compact- governance (majority style government: rich white men had a say) Abandoned village- found somewhere to live for the first winter- plymouth colony. Landed in december: landed in new england, not virginia like they expected.
