Slaves, Women, and Poor Whites: Revolutionary Change? Lesson 8 Part 2 !
For assignment: Are these people actually free? Are they getting that revolutionary freedom
from the war? !
-Were their lives impacted or not during the Revolutionary period !

Change during the revolution: !
Gradual Abolition !
-Groups of people who believe that slavery should end!
Live in the north!
Quakers - religious group in New jersey or Pennsylvania, violates a religious system
that they have !
-Morally wrong !
-Creation of this abolition movement that gradually has all colonies abolish slavery !
-Think this is going to bring revolutionary freedom to the slaves and can impact these
slaves !
-First time in American history these abolishtists are white allies to these African
Americans to try and help them get freedom !
-Colonies should be free so slaves should be free!
-Legal process (below)!
New Jersey Example!
-Frees children born to slaves after July 4, 1804!
Anyone born after this date is a slave for the rest of their lives in New Jersey!
-Mandates that these children serve their mother’s master until age 21 if female and age
25 if male!
-What is their status during this period?!
-A lot of people that see the revolution(poor whites, women, and slaves), don’t actually
get freedom during the war - conservative because they aren’t necessarily becoming
free!
-What does this mean?!
If you are still living as a slave for over a quarter of your life, are you actually
understanding and getting that freedom?!
-Women!
Economic and Political roles!
-Voting Rights!
At the end of the war women look back!
-Participated in the market place!
-Participated in being a political rhetor !
Enforcing boycotts!
-Women’s voting rights are restricted !
Key issue that Americans are struggling with when we get into the 1780’s/1790’s !
Government is deciding who gets citizenship? !
-Who are these people who can be a part of this new American republic?!
-They tie citizenship to voting rights, military service, and respectable behavior !
-Women are not seen as proper and full citizens because they can not vote and they
can’t participate in the military !
New Avenues: Republican Motherhood !
-The idea that women in the new nation decide that their role is to train the next
generation of leaders for the republic !
-They take on a very active and engaged role in trying to train, tech their children the
values of the nation, and the idea of the spirit of 1776, the ideas of revolution, the ideas
of freedom !
