Theory:possible explanations of information, observations, and life experiences which provide continuity between past and present events. Dimensions of relationships: content of the interactions, diversity of the interactions, qualities of the interactions, qualities that emerge from the relative frequency and patterning of different types of interactions, complementarity vs. reciprocity, intimacy, interpersonal perception, commitment. Transactional theory:bidirectional, reciprocal relationships between infants and their caregivers: infant stimulates parent through appearance or behavior, parent attributes meaning to message, parent reacts with some form of caregiving. Microsystem: includes parents, close family members, and caregivers. Mesosystem: includes relationships among the people in the microsystem. Ecosystem: consists of settings that do not include children but that affect them. Examples include attitudes and policies in the parents" workplaces, availability of health services: epigenetic: the process by which a gene is told whether or not to turn on (express itself) child care regulations, and training opportunities. Macrosystem: refers to the values and laws of the society.
