BIOL 2443 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Anterior Interventricular Sulcus, Posterior Interventricular Sulcus, Pericardial Friction Rub
Document Summary
The heart beats about 100,000 times a day or 35 million beats a year. Propels blood through approximately 120,000 km (75,000 mi) of vessels. Pumps about 5 liters of blood per minute. The heart is hollow, cone-shaped, about the size of a closed fist. Pericardium (cardium = heart) membrane that surrounds and protects the: fibrous pericardium attaches to the diaphragm; prevents, serous pericardium deeper layer around the heart. Pericardial cavity consists of pericardial fluid which reduces friction overstretching, provides protection, and anchors heart in the mediastinum between the membrane layers. Outermost surface of the heart, inferior to the pericardium: myocardium. Inflammation of the pericardium: chest pain into left shoulder and down left arm with pericardial. Acute pericarditis ms type, sudden, no known cause but maybe viral. Intercalated discs: connect ends together of two cardiac muscle fibers together. Chambers of the heart: allows muscle action potentials to conduct from one muscle fiber to it"s neighboring fiber.
