Our understanding of the period is incomplete, and constantly changing. Heinrich schliemann (1822-1890) an important (if controversial) gure. Sir arthur evans important for his work at cnossus. Greece settled since paleolithic (at least 70,000 bce), but evidence scanty. Most notable neolithic remains for out purposes are possible religious idols. 3000 - 2000 bce early bronze age. 2000 - 1600 bce middle bronze age. 1600 - 1100 bce late bronzelin age. Reached its pinnacle in the early part of the late bronze age (late minoan subdivided into old palace, new palace, etc. ) Palace complex at knossos may have inspired the labyrinth myth. C. 1400 mainland civilization in the asce . Excavations begun in 1899 by sir arthur evans. He named the prehistoric civilization he found there minoan after the mythical ruler Middle-helladic ushered in by invasions from the north (and possibly the east) Gradually built up a civilization that peaked in the late helladic :called mycenaean after mycenae.
