Astr ptys 170b2 - lecture 16 - the outer solar system. Strong magnetic field, 20x stronger than earth"s. Many flybys including: pioneer 10(nasa 1973-1974), voyager 1,2(nasa,1979) Orbiters including: galileo (nasa, 95-03), and juno (nasa, since 2016) Jupiter is mostly composed of hydrogen and helium of very low densities. Its core pressure is about 100 million bar, with a temp of around 20,000 k! Internally: liquid hydrogen 7,000 km under cloud level, metallic hydrogen 14,000 km below could level, and the core is 60,000 km below. Clouds of many different chemicals, including ammonia, ammonium hydrosulfide, and water polluted by chromophores : molecules with nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, and/or a hydrocarbon haze. Zonal wind map: juno spacecraft observed that the zonal winds penetrate deep into the cloud level of jupiter, about 3000 km. From week 5, io is very volcanically active, its surface less than a year old, driven by tidal heating.
