Dogs read emotions in the human face. Humans read emotions in dog"s face and barks. Both rely on evolved capacity as a socially cooperative species for reading each other"s communicative signals. Dogs attend to eye, midface and mouth region of humans and dogs, to read negative and positive emotions. Use same brain areas to decode dog and human facial expressions. World learning: ability to learn names of objects. Dog rico (border collie) learned over 200 words for toys and could pick out a novel toy (new word) from pile! Some learn close to 1000 words dogs attend to human voice to abstract the full meaning of a command (not just an expression) Experiment: - sound recording of a human scolding a dog for having eaten dry dog food from a bowl- dogs will refrain from eating the food. Robotic voice scolding was not as effective.
