1894 thomas edison opens first kinetoscope parlor -movies were a solitoary experience. Images showing a horse in full gallup no real story line. Lumiere brothers invent portable movie camera and projector- more types of motion and movement on film. Early (cid:1005)9(cid:1004)(cid:1004)"s: nickelodeon theaters became popular- shared viewing experience- cost 5 cents. 1903 edwin s porter directs the great train robbery- no sound, no music. Established basic film storytelling conventions movie was a little less than 10 min long. 1915 produces birth of a nation- the clansman. Focused on a controversial subject- rise of klu klux klan. Era of movie stars started under dw griffith. Stars worked directly for studios (like paramount studios would directly hire the actor) Block bookings- controlled how movies were aired and where. Vertical integration-the controlled the pipeline- actors, movies, distribution. 1948 supreme court rules studios must sell theaters and cannot own the entire system.
