WGS 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Social Cost, Sheryl Sandberg, Gender Pay Gap
Document Summary
House work is not considered real work because: not paid, produced for immediate consumption- use value, privatized. Women who work outside home continue to maintain primary responsibility for housework. Average husbands time is spent on non-daily, non repetitive work. Advantage for women being primary caregivers- close bond with the children. Housework burdens escape husband in return for time on the job. Money is biggest challenge to single mothers. When women are in abusive relationships they don"t leave because: have trouble finding alternative housing, cannot support themselves, language barriers, shelters are not viable options sometimes. In domestic violence and both partners are arrested women are more likely to need medical attention and have injuries. Vawa- violence against women act- 1994- started working on 70s: increased funding for battered women"s shelter, mandated harsher penalties for batterers, made crossing state lines to pursue a partner a federal offence.
