School Shootings

• Total homicides and suicides at schools (ages 5-18) *just numbers*
o 1992-1993 to now: on average we have had 30-45 homicides committed on
school grounds
▪ For children: 15-35 homicides
o 2010 we start seeing a steady increase
o Columbine: first major mass shootings at a school in Colorado
▪ 11 deaths
• There is a mass component
• Started paying attention when white middle class children started being victims
o Society started paying attention to it now
Child Abuse and Maltreatment (DHHS)
• 3.4 million kids were reported to CPS
• 207000 kids were in foster care
• Estimated 683,000 child abuse victims
• 1,670 children died from maltreatment
o 75% under age of 3
o 78% killed by parents
• Nonfatal Victimization
o Outside of school especially among older kids
o Schools are a locale where violence occurs but more of less serious variety
o Race and Ethnicity

• James Byrd Jr
o 1998 in Jasper, TX and got offered a ride
o Chaining him up and decapitated
o Race discrimination
• Matthew Shepard
o Victim of hate crime, thought he was gay
o Student of University of Wyoming
o Beat him and hung him on a fence
o Life without possibility of parole
• Most hate crimes are violent crimes (55%)- largest category
o 42% property crimes
o 3% society (terrorism, etc)
o 34% destruction- damage or destruction to property
▪ Spray painting a swastica
o 26% intimidation - violent crime
o Agg assault - largest part I crimes
o Property hate crimes

o 22% religion
