I. Auguste Comte= People identifying with their miserable work.
a. Spiritual Breakdown of French Society= concerned with the fracturing of the
French culture because of too many revolutions during time period.
b. Spill-over effect= occupation becomes central to life this work life spills over on
to the home life and identity of an individual.
i. In this case, his worries were that if talks of the miserable lives of the
working class would combine can create a bigger revolution destroying
society.
c. A Catholic Solution= in order to solve this problem he developed this “ Catholic
Solution”
i. It creates Collectivism
ii. It unifies people and provides support
II. Emile Durkheim= He was the first appointed person to professor of Sociology
a. Reality sui generis= society is something external that requires you to do
something.
b. Anomie= too many norms= confused due to increased individualism
i. Norms= proper behavior to guide everyday life.
Allows one to interact with others.
c. Suicide: A study in Sociology= the social forces/ causes that pushes one to
commit suicide.
i. Most likely to commit suicide: An unmarried, unemployed, protestant
male with no children.
ii. Solution= social integration
iii. Individualism= bad Men are forced to be providers too much stress
iv. Collective= good
d. Sacred vs. Profane:
i. Sacred= deals with Society
ii. Profane= de3eals with people/ individual
iii. Children= sacred but individual child= profane
iv. “We can never experience sacred society but we can come close by
collective effervescence.” = shed individual identity.
v. Effervescence= bubbly fuzzy (energized) state
vi. Collective= with people
e. Crime
i. Is crime functional or dysfunctional?
Crime is functional
ii. Crime is an incontinence for an individual it is functional for society.
1. Creates Jobs = judges, police, lawyers, jails, guards …
2. Helps to clarify norms boundaries.
3. If all crime was banished then by default society will begin to
criminalize other activities.
