Some chemicals work by attracting the growth cone or others by repelling it: sperry"s research with newts indicated that axons follow a chemical trail to reach their destination. If child suffers from fas, neurons move past their designated location: differentiation- forming of the new axon and dendrites that gives the neuron its distinctive shape and function. The ones that stay become powerful and efficient: vulnerable/critical periods- during cns development are sensitive to environment harm, teratogen- an agent that disrupts a baby"s development when the mother is exposed during pregnancy. Especially during early pregnancy: zika virus, transmitted by daytime active mosquitoes, related to dengue and yellow fever, japanese encephalitis, and west nile virus, microcephaly- small head , link between zika fever. Visual structure & function: our brain interprets objects off of the wavelength our eyes perceive. Impulses in one neuron indicate light, impulses in another neuron indicate sound.
