Document Summary
Stress, coping, and health psychology: symptoms of stress: negative emotions, tension/arousal, mental cognitive inefficiency, stress as adjustment to events that are hard to adapt to within given time frame. Primary appraisal (perceiving threat or loss)- can be sudden (noise in a dark alley) or gradual: influenced by situation and person, consider size, strength, and skill differences in a person. Secondary appraisal (deciding how to react)- evaluating the options and the likelihood they"ll help you: influenced by both person and situation. Coping (carrying out response)- putting secondary appraisal into action: cycling back and forth among the 3 elements. Emotion focused- doing something about the distress association with threat/loss and reducing: multiple ways of coping the emotions (problem and emotion focused often interwoven with each other in practice) Use of social support- could be emotion focused or problem focused. Interpretation: stress wears you out, leaves you vulnerable: stress as something people create, as they approach the world.
