Trait view of personality: personality as the qualities that form the person"s essence . Unipolar traits, from zero to a lot of some quality (hostility) Bipolar traits, with zero in middle, 2 ends with opposite qualities (very warm/very cold: goals of trait personality psychologists, deciding what traits matter. Figure out how to tell where individuals fall on trait dimensions (theoretical pathway, earlier)- many are wary of theoretical pathway. Resembles correlation, but many variables, not just 2. For decades, there has been disagreement on how many dimensions. More recently, an emerging consensus on a 5-factor model: five-factor model (5 very broad traits)- 5 fundamental traits of personality (ocean) Neuroticism- anxious, nervous, worried: personality assessment as personality inventories. Profile is more than summary, because placement on one has different meaning as a function of others. Intrapersonal functioning: very little: emphasis on constancy rather than process. Appealing because it can be covered in 5 traits.
