Introduction to personality: personality as the dynamic organization within a person of systems that forms an enduring pattern of behavior, thought, and emotions, specific person vs a person in general, two main focuses for theories: Individual differences: broad issues lead to broad theories, theories are used to explain: make predictions, many diverse theories of personality exist. A lot to explain; as a result, they sometimes have trouble predicting: personality theories have trouble predicting. Psychoanalytic approach to personality: origins in writings of sigmund freud, in late 1800s and first third of 20th century. Victorian era as stimulus to freud"s thinking: victorian era upper class people saw themselves as rational, in control of their own destiny, General belief in human superiority, perfection, control, rationality. Freud (influenced by darwin) said the opposite was true. Humans are primitive animals with veneer of civilization. Humans are driven by forces they are unaware of: humans as primitive, instinct ridden, unaware of motives, more animal than god-like.
