Document Summary
Neuropsychology: basic divisions in nervous system alive. Central nervous system (cns) is brain and spinal cord. Layers of brain: hindbrain, midbrain, forebrain (cerebral cortex: hindbrain- keeps us alive, midbrain- in the middle, forebrain (cerebral cortex)- most forward (on top) Cortical hemispheres: left/right hemispheres, sides of the cerebral cortex, frontal lobes are most important (where action begins, band between the two hemispheres- corpus collosum. Somatic nervous system handles sensing and motor activities: sensory and motor experiences. Autonomic nervous system ((cid:1688)autonomous(cid:1689)) is semi-independent, keeps body: bodily functions keeping you alive. Parasympathetic nervous system tends to decrease arousal: dampens down expenditures. Another angle on the broad view of cns: dual-process models of brain function: 2 systems sometimes in competition with one another, ex: want something now but could have something better if you waited (delay of gratification) Lower level control: simple associations, emotional reactions, guide action: older more basic, use associations, emotional reactions to guide impulsive actions, stupid, basic, fast brain, not thoughtful.
