Document Summary

Motivation: concept devised to account for the initiation of behavior, the direction of behavior, and the intensity of behavior. Initiation of behavior (why you do anything: direction of behavior (choice of one among other things) Intensity of behavior (vigor, speed, thoroughness: drive-habit theory, your needs build up and must be satisfied periodically, any unsatisfied need creates an aversive tension state (drive) Passage of time creates an aversive tension state called drive: drive pushes behavior forward (intensity) Because drive is aversive, we try to escape it. Thus, drive imparts intensity to behavior (push: drive pushes behavior forward (intensity) Direction of behavior comes from habit: habit determines direction of behavior (what behavior occurs in what situation) Issue: original view of drive as generalized across all needs; but not fully true: originally generalized drive (all needs go into the same drive); then specific drive.
