Document Summary
The biological basis of behavior: overview of the nervous system. The nervous system can be divided into two parts, the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. Central = brain and spinal cord, peripheral is all the other nerves. Somatic = voluntary nerves, autonomic = self-regulating eg digestion, heart rate, breathing. Autonomic system = sympathetic(fight or flight, arousing) and parasympathetic(calming). Test questions would be about the tree of slides. Cell body of neuron = soma, has a nucleus and the rest of the organelles that are present in regular cells. Axon is the longest dendrite and culminates in terminal fibers of the axon. Myelin cells are along the axon and are support cells that insulate the axon. Impulse is due to a change in electrical polarity. Don"t want electrical signal to get shortcircuited therefore protected by myelin sheath. myelin sheath insulates the axon. Also, insulation helps to transmit electrical impulses much faster.
