Guidelines
• USDA issues guidelines every 5 years
• My plate is graphic of a plate divided into four sections for fruits, veggies, protein, and
grains with a cup of dairy beside it
o My plate took away food pyramid
o Caution against portions
o Half your plate should involve fruits and vegetables
American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines
• 4.5 cups of fruits and veggies per day
• 1 drink alcohol for women and 2 for men
• Eat oily fish 2/week
• Eat 1,500 mg or less of salt/day
o Stricter sodium guidelines because leading factor in stroke and heart attack
• Eat lean meats
• Decrease cholesterol
• Select fat free low dairy products
2015 USDA GUIDELINES
• Less than 2300 mg of sodium
• One drink per day women and 2 per men
• Less 10% diet saturated fats
