Document Summary

Any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscle contraction that results in a substantial increase in caloric requirements above ree. This broadens the definition of physical activity (beyond just working out) Some argue that increase in energy expenditure must be large enough to elicit health benefits. Activities that require movement but not formal exercise (brush hair, make bed, etc ) We have removed this with modern living. Leisure time activity: activity performed for sake of activity itself (soccer, treadmill, etc ) Lifestyle activity: physical activity performed for the sake of a task related outcome (ex:walk to work; build house) More fit=lifestyle activity is easier so more likely to do it. As leisure time pa increases, mortality decreases. But, at highest activity levels, negative effect possible. Biggest impact from no activity to little activity. Exercise: planned, structured, leisure time pa to improve/maintain fitness, performance, or health. Ex: soccer for physical conditioning=exercise, soccer for fun=leisure time activity.
