GSC 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Metamorphic Rock, Convergent Boundary, Plate Tectonics
Document Summary
Chemical composition of original rock: the greatest factor in determining the mineral assemblage of a metamorphic rock is composition of original rock, the parent rock it is called, limestone for example makes marble when metamorphosed. If it starts to melt it isn"t a metamorphic rock anymore. Stress in metamorphism: stress applied pressure that results in deformation in a solid, & development of new textures, uniform stress pressure is equal in all directions, these rocks don"t have a strong directional component. Differential stress pressure is different in different directions: produces a foliated texture, higher stress from one direction, texture is controlled by differential vs. uniform stress, differential stress produces a foliated texture. Increasing temperature & pressure > different styles of metamorphism. Metamorphic changes that occur while temperature & pressure are rising, usually while abundant intergranular fluid is present i. e. , a wet metamorphism, are called prograde metamorphic effects: prograde metamorphism is the common way to form metamorphic rocks.
