Document Summary

Polymerization process that links monomers together chemically. (e. g. cellulose is a polymer of glucose) Types of polymerization rxns: condensation (to form nylon-10,6) 2 monomers react to form a larger unit while a small molecular (h2o or hcl) is eliminated. Polyamides and polyesters are examples of condensation polymers. Linkage between acid halide and amine, elimination of hcl. Usually, the acid halide that is used is dicarboxylic acid, but we will use diacid chloride. A small amount of naoh is added to neutralize the hcl released each time a new bond is formed. Not safe to take home: radical polymerization rxns or chain addition polymerization. It uses an initiator (benzoyl peroxide in this case) that generates radicals when heated to 80-95 c. the radicals react with the styrene monomer to begin the chain addition process. The active specie continues to add individual monomer units until all of the monomer is used up: formation of a cross-linked polymer, the slime experiment.
