Document Summary

Elements (periodic table); one kind of atom. All other sciences will use chemistry as their central science. The properties of matter are determined by the properties of compounds and atoms. Need to understand this to help improve and develop the world. Understanding the small parts of the world will help you understand the larger parts. Atom: indivisible matter; can not break down. The smallest unit that keeps all properties. E- electrons: outer electron cloud (determines properties of element) Has a compound nucleus of protons and neutrons. Completely mixed together; dissolved completely or blended smoothly. Do not mix together, both are present. A mixture of sand and water can be separated by decanting. Mixtures are separable because the different components have different physical or chemical properties. A mixture of an insoluble solid and a liquid can be separated by filtration- process in which the mixture is poured through a filter paper in a funnel.
