PSYC 437 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Telepathy, Nomothetic
I. Functional Analysis (FA)
A. What is FA? What does it mean?
1. Assessment process used to understand contextualized factors that underlie or
maintain behavior
a) Interview
b) Direct observation over time
c) Systematic manipulations
B. ABC model terminology and examples
1. Antecedents = triggers
a) What factors precede behavior?
(1) People, places, things, time of day, activities occurring
b) 3 types of triggers
(1) Person
(2) Place
(3) Object (including time)
c) Recency of triggers
(1) Proximal (immediately before behavior)
(2) Recent
(3) Distal (past experiences)
d) Strategies for dealing with triggers
(1) Avoid
(2) Alter
(3) Substitute
e) Antecedents are predictors
(1) Important to identify when behavior will occur
(2) Anticipate and possibly prevent problem behavior
2. Behavior
3. Consequence
a) What happened because of behavior?
b) How did people react?
c) What did the person get/avoid?
d) How do they differ?
