Motivation concerns the conditions, forces, and processes responsible for energizing, directing, and sustaining behavior. Energizing- results in the expenditure of effort. Directive- involves focusing effort towards a particular object or objective. Sustaining- involved persisting in effort over time. Psychodynamic theories people do or don"t possess inborn tendency to want to engage in work activity. Environment, incentives, and personal choice do not influence motivation. Basic idea: people are or are not motivated to do work. Motivation comes from within, but is driven by fulfilling basic needs. Environment influences motivation by meeting person"s needs nature perspective of motivation. Basic idea: people will be motivated if work helps them fulfill intrinsic needs. Behavioral psychology motivation arises from efforts to seek out rewards and avoid punishments. No internal drivers of motivation nurture perspective of motivation. Basic idea: people will be motivated with proper incentives. Motivation arises from purposeful psychological processes consciously guided by individuals. Interaction of nature and nurture guided by goals of individual.
