PSYC 334 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Silent Treatment, Devaluation, Sociosexual Orientation
Document Summary
The degree to which they consider their relationships with us to be valuable, important, and close. We care because of the need to belong. This is how we figure out if our belonging is being fulfilled. Various degrees of acceptance and rejection are possible, ranging from maximal inclusion -> ambivalence -> maximal exclusion. Ambivalence: doesn"t matter if you"re there or not. Maximal exclusion: party stops until we kick you out. Ambivalence and maximal exclusion hurt just about the same, we interpret them the same. Either way, you don"t get belonging out of this, so it hurts. Relational devaluation: apparent decreases in others" regard for us- causes hurt feelings that are much like the emotions that accompany physical pain. Let"s be friends is an inclusive statement. Rd hurts more even though it often includes inclusion because its less than it used to be. You are getting belonging, but feel you are not worthy of the belonging you used to have.
