Easier to learn language before 1 because the neural connections haven"t been set yet. 4 types phonological disorder, stuttering, expressive language disorder, mixed expressive-receptive language disorder (combined understand and expression difficulties) How are they diagnosed: low scores in certain areas. Large variety of tests that have subtests that measure different areas of intelligence. Children with learning disorders have iq score at least in normal range. Standard rule of thumb is that the achievement has to be at least 2 standard deviations below the average iq level. Problems might be: cultural insensitivity, debate about whether or not to use a more dimensional model.
