Malaria: humors: galen (humoral explanation, caused by imbalance, reestablish balance: recommend bleeding/purging, explains origins of disease, predisposition, diathesis: constitution, occasional causes: emotional strain, over-worked, shock, illness, etc. Max van pettenkofer: anti-contagionist, mainly concerned with cholera, gives attention to local environment, has implications for malaria, not a contagious disease, pathological material enters the body, it is not excreted, cannot be transmitted from person to person. Malaria as a disease of tropics: found in europe/north america, difference is of one degree. In tropics: constitutions of white people subjected to new/unfamiliar conditions made them particularly vulnerable. Mosquitoes: scientists/physicians knew of many places with mosquitoes but no malaria, no clear correlation between being bitten and disease. Patrick manson: 1883: elephantiasis: basically causes crazy growths, discovers that filarial worm that causes it to be transmitted by mosquitoes, first example of vector borne disease, filaria can be transmitted by mosquitoes perhaps malaria as well.
