Giving a complicated speech in support of a motion that has already been passed. A notorious criminal is made president of a major philanthropic foundation. You declare your love over the telephone to a voicemail message. As you are being knighted, your pants fall down. Reflection on our minuteness and brevity appears to be intimately connect with the sense that life is meaningless . In ordinary life a situation is absurd when it includes a conspicuous discrepancy between pretension or aspiration and reality. The collision between our seriousness and the seeming arbitrariness of it all. Sub specie aeternitatis the view of eternity: step outside of yourself and see if things really matter in the big picture. We can take the eternal perspective, and from there it seems there is no standard of meaning. We cannot live human lives without energy and attention, not without making choices which show that we take some things more seriously thank others.
