Combination of features translates into a set of commands to the speech muscles. Things are not always what they seem to be. Sounds may change in a particular environment . Same sound may vary between languages (or speakers) English [p] vs. spanish [p] poco [p] peso [p] papa [p] Aspiration: extra release of air after release of stop. Each word is stored in the lexicon with its exact pronunciation. Hypothesis b: there is a pattern, a rule in mental grammar. Hypothesised rule: stresses syllable initially rule in the grammar of english. We often alter the pronunciation of the sounds we think we are saying. Such changes usually affect classes of sounds rather than individual sounds. These classes of sounds are identified by classes. There are rules in the grammar of any language. English speakers do not notice the difference between [ ] and [p] There are two separate mental representations of the same sound.
