Document Summary

Receptors are specialized cells or sub cellular structures that transduce an environmental stimulus into electrical impulses that can be interpreted by the nervous system. Wo(cid:374)"t respo(cid:374)d to sti(cid:373)uli that they are (cid:374)ot trai(cid:374)ed to: eyes wont response to touch. Sensory recpeotrs translate the stimuli into things that neurons can read. Intensity coding: receptors can detect and code strength or magnititde of the stimulus, raded response- the greateer the stimulus the greater the response. Spatial summation- the larger number of receptors that are stimuluated, the stronger the perceived stimulus. Temporal summation- a strong stimulus causes receptors to fire at a higher frequency than a weak stimulus. They differentially respond to the same stimulus- but from the same actual stimulus= adequate stimulus. Adaptation: decrease in firing rate in response to repeative stimulus. When stimulus is there for 4 seconds, the first second will be an increase, but it then decreases afterwards, but still there. Receptor no longer responds when stimulus is repetitive.
