Internal state: impairment or reduction of functional abilities: new diseases or public health problems, violence. Illness: subjectively experienced phenomenon, can be diseased without being ill, 2 categories, medical- respectable, definite morality, non-medical- arising from personal difficulties. Conditions that we now think of as public health problems: violence, alcoholism. Changing nature of disease, health, illness: adhd, pms, shortness, homosexuality? (sin, disease, crime, alternative lifestyle, a condition may be objectively verifiable but considering it a disease is partially a social value judgement. Context is increasingly important in understanding health: concept of health and illness is largely socially constructed. Health and disease are not polar opposites, but exist along a continuum. Changing nature of disease, health, illness: treatment involved restoring balance among the humors, mysticism and the church. In the middle ages, mysticism and demonology dominated concept of disease: therapy was by torturing the body or through prayer and good works.
