Common person had many different authority figures helping them solve problems. Origins of the state: protestant reformation & the thirty years" war (1618-1648) Published ninety-five theses criticizing roman catholic church. Triggered local conflicts b/w two groups in holy roman empire. Conflict escalates to point where secular political rulers get involved for personal reason.
